Juice Day Out 04: Bayside Free Bass'n

JDO-04_Info_Square.jpg

Juice Day Out brings together fun people and some of San Diego’s finest national, regional & local DJs for daytime dancing and social shenanigans. Come on out!

Deejays: Cole Vassallo, Evlo, Matty Ladd and Wes Smith anchor the party with guests. We feature locals (and occasionally an international passer by) that are active, creative, hard working, passionate and great at what they do.

Vibes: You bring those, but hey, everything we do usually has one foot in the desert and one foot in the club, everyone’s invited.

Sound: Hi-fidelity sound by Bomb Shelta. These kids put the bump in the trunk.

Venue: Campland on the Bay. We have a sweet pavillion and dance floor about 50 yards from the water.

Food: There is a restaurant 10 feet from us where you can lounge and soak in the day.

Drinks: There is a tiki bar right behind us too, where you can soak in tasty adult (nor not) beverages.

Time: We get rolling right about when you crawl out of bed from last night and need that bloody mary, glass of tequila or whiskey and pickles.

Attire: Beach culture attire, pajamas, furry boots & shorts, or whatever you are wiling to be seen wearing in public. Anything creatively aquatic is encouraged and for this one, all your new Burning Man gifts;)

Ticketing: This one is FREE

Ages: Any age is welcome, but if you are under 21 you can not be served or sit at the bars.

But What About? Any other questions…post up on the event discussion;)

THE ARTISTS:

[DUBLOADZ] {DUBSTEP} -|Disciple | Smog | Never Say Die | Rottun | I Am Audio|-

Dubloadz has been a rapidly rising star over the last 2 years, having come out of nowhere to really carve out a niche for his trademark wobbly sound.

Often credited as one of the key artists in turning around the more underground side of Dubstep, Dave Nardolilli has seen a lot of support from key players such as Skrillex, Excision, Datsik, 12th Planet and more, as well as being snapped up by Disciple Recordings along the way.

With collaborations with Trampa, Virtual Riot, and 50 Carrot, remixes for Dodge & Fuski and 12th Planet, and a string of sold out show across North America already under his belt, the pace is building quickly for the LA-based producer. With tours across Australia and New Zealand kicking off 2016, Dubloadz is just starting to come into his element.

[ARCHNEMISIS] {LIVE GLITCH HOP} |-ARCHNEMESIS MUSIC-|

Since its inception in 2009, the Archnemesis sound has been in a constant state of evolution. With musical beginnings firmly established through a strict regimen of classical training on the cello and piano, eventually jazz theory and composition crept in, and more instruments like bass, drums and guitar were discovered and learned. The culmination of this vast musical knowledge ultimately shaped the Archnemesis sound before propelling it through a variety of analog stratospheres and into the digital realm of electronic music production. With a sound based primarily in, but not limited to, “electro hip-hop soul”, Archnemesis continues to evolve musically and socially by encompassing all styles and genres of music while simultaneously welcoming in all the fans that follow those genres.

Through extensive national touring, Archnemesis has created a steadily growing fan base aptly dubbed the “Nemesis Army”, and strives to create an un-biased community both online and at live shows where anyone can express themselves without discrimination. Also, by using music as a platform for outreach, Archnemesis is constantly generating new and innovative ideas to foster a community and encourage change.

When not touring, Archnemesis has managed to compile an extensive catalogue of EP’s, LP’s remixes and collaborations. Beginning with the 2010 release of the EP Diamonds and Glass, the full-length albums People’s Radio and Every Man For Himself were both well received by fans and critics alike. The remixes of Kendrick Lamar’s “Backseat Freestyle” and The xx’s “Do You Mind” both charted on The Hype Machine and saw extensive play from DJ’s across the country. A fourth EP, Follow Me, was released in July of 2013, and it took an even bigger step towards truly defining the Archnemesis sound. With an unequaled afro and amazing light show, every Archnemesis encounter is a full sensory experience, one that is highly charged and delicious. This energetic live approach has been brought to such acclaimed festivals as The Hangout Music Festival, Lights All Night, Camp Bisco, Electric Forest and SnowGlobe, as well as theatres and clubs across the country. With momentum building and no signs of slowing down, Archnemesis continues to create an amazing live experience at clubs and festivals while steadily growing the ever-faithful "Nemesis Army" and working towards positive change.

[MIKE BALANCE] {HOUSE} -|INSTEREO|-

The Low Down on my Red Bull India Tour & Related Shenanigans

Wow, what and incredible time.  As many of you know I recently had the opportunity to head for the hills, or the other side of the world in this case, and perform a few shows in India.  When people ask me "How was India?", my best answer so far is "Sensory overload at it's finest". Plate_India2016_FB, Wes Smith, It's Wes Smith Yo, Red Bull, Chennai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, India

Getting into it, first of all, huge thanks to Naveen & team from Red Bull and Guru and team from Counter Culture for making it all happen as well as my good pals Manny & Skip of BlanK for their continued support.

Wes Smith, It's Wes Smith Yo, Red Bull, Chennai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, India

Now then...I had been to India before, once on holiday where I ended up playing a now legendary beach festival in the south which led to coming back as part of the exhibition for the Red Bull Thre3Style competitions, ironically where I met Q-Bert.  This eventually led to my 2016 return.

Wes Smith, It's Wes Smith Yo, Red Bull, Chennai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, India

This time around, the trip included stops in Chennai, New Delhi, Hyderabad & Bangalore.  If you have not been to India, these cities are what I like to call India India vs. say westerner vacation India.  No resorts, no burgers, just soaking up all the Masala Dosa, Idly, Appam, and bottled water I could in 10 days.

Event_2016-03-12_ChennaiPoster, Wes Smith, It's Wes Smith Yo, Red Bull, Chennai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, India

First stop was Chennai, roughly 5 million people.  We should be able to drop some bass there right?  The Leather Bar at The Park was kind enough to make room for the boom, and so we did.  These are a few friends that made the magic happen while I watched the birdie.

Wes Smith, It's Wes Smith Yo, Red Bull, Chennai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, India

Second Stop, New Delhi.  I didn't do a gig here but on the plane ride over, courtesy of Lufthansa I read an article about Hauz Khas Village.  I couldn't resist checking it out so on my down time I spun up for a couple days, met some cool people, and confirmed the hype;)  This is a shot of a really cool colorful building that overlooks the vibrant village that springs to life each night.

Wes Smith, It's Wes Smith Yo, Red Bull, Chennai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, India

Third Stop, Hyderabad.  I played a crazy gig here at The Farm.  Don't let the name or "coffee bar" fool you, this joint is on fire, and the likes of Digweed, Afrojack and more have rolled through in recent times.  A small, ecstatic crowd listened to me for 3+ hours and danced like mad.  When people ask me what it's like, this is it, this is what it's all about.  Video snippet below.

https://youtu.be/jEhOib3nY8I

Final Stop, Bangalore.  Here I played the monster IndieMarch festival promoted by Counter Culture.  5 Stages, Bands, DJs, Producers, Et..Al.  Ironically I played at the Alien Ware arena, which was to ironic considering I have a soundtrack for a video game coming out on PS4, XBox & STEAM in May 2016.  My favorite shot right here.

Wes Smith, It's Wes Smith Yo, Red Bull, Chennai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, India

There's so much more to every adventure, so here's a few links if you are ready for the deep dive, and good luck shaping your own;)

It's Wes Smith Yo! In Milwaukee, WI for Transistor Rhythm

On Oct 17th I'm headed to Milwaukee for Transistor Rhythm brought to you by Dynamic Groove with support from City Air Milwaukee.  I put together a call with the promoters to shoot the breeze on the Milwaukee music scene, my Magic Fugu stickers and the 411 on what they do with such love and passion. Interview by Kelly (Agent 137) Ross:

First I met up with Nic Zimmerman, aka Schwilly-Z, Wes Smith fan and birthday boy (ok maybe not a boy, but that's the term, right?).

Nic Zimmerman

How did you get involved in this particular show?

I have being dj'ing for about 12 years and I was searching through Soundcloud one day for tunes. I heard Lady Waks show that Wes had done and thought it was awesome. I went digging through his Soundcloud for tracks and heard "Bring Back That Funk" and thought it was a massive tune.

I started following him Wes from there and when he posted the "Electric Love" GoPro live recording from that show, I thought it was very interesting and such a great idea. With my birthday coming up, I wanted to be able to bring him from Milwaukee somehow and spread the knowledge of what I already knew about him to others. I reached out to Natalie Bush, as I knew that her company produced quality shows and to see if she would want to do a show with him as the feature artist. Natalie obliged, she has thrown shows here, in Orlando and even Detroit in the past and was completely on board to make it happen.

Tell me about the types of shows City Air Milwaukee throws:

They are known for quality talent and bringing people who are not from the area so music lovers get an opportunity to hear those they might not see otherwise. It’s not necessarily genre specific, but they throw decent size parties that’s not a bar but also not super trendy. The dance floor will be packed and depending on the show, breakers with be break dancing at breaks shows and the house heads will be grooving at the house shows.

Next up was Natalie Bush, the promoter for the show and owner of City Air Milwaukee:

I spoke with Nic and he gave me some background, tell me your thoughts on this show and why you wanted to throw it:

I really want it to be about the show, Wes and good quality dj’s - the main goal is to bring some dj’s that haven’t been in the area in the past. I am really looking forward to the show myself as a breakbeat fan, I enjoy Wes's style of breaks to the booty side all the way to Adam Freeland and Meat Katie.

Milwaukee

What were your beginnings and how did that lead up to starting your company?

My beginnings started in the Chicago house illegal warehouse days. I brought my flyers and notes to my parents to fight for my right to rave and thinking back on it now, we were nuts to be wandering around on the South side of Chicago to go to these shows, but it was magical and we loved it.

I moved to Raleigh for a bit and then to Denver where I started the Rocky Mountain Roller Girls (derby). From there I started doing shows (rock fest, dance and dj events) at the roller derby events. I was spending more time out and meeting people and that’s where I started developing a love and interest in djing. I retired from roller derby and when I started running a dj event, when I met my now husband, Marc Bush aka Markis (who is also playing at Transistor Rhythm).

Bush Performance

How did you two meet?

I met him at a traffic light at 2 in the morning and fell in love immediately. We were battling red lights and he asked for my number at one. We kept battling and I lost him around a turn but he called and we both pulled over and started shooting the shit on the side of the road. We went to Cancun for his birthday, he played at an after hours which resulted in us moving to Mexico for 7 months. After that we spent 4 years in Lima, Peru. We met a number of promoters, both established and new with poor English and general lack if a sense of business. That was when saw an opportunity and started helping local Peruvians book talent and throw show. We went back to the states and got to know the scene and started up again...

Then one night it began in Detroit at an after party after Movement. We decided to take a further look at expansion to join forces and Chapter of City Air was born. We began to do monthlies at Studio 200 and some in-betweens such as Halloween parties. It’s the only venue in MIL that caters to an EDM forum - house, techno, drum&bass, etc.

MIL- City Air

Tell me more about the breaks scene in MIL:

There is generally a place for breaks in MIL and the upside to a smaller niche market is that we can do what we want and we don’t have to play into the market. We can stick to the root and bring real talent not what is considered labeled talent or popular because some buy your likes type dj is being promoted by the masses. We have an awesome sense of community - it is amazing how connected we are…
Studio 200 is a proper 200 person venue and it’s not bright lights a big city nightclub, but it is a dark friendly environment with affordable entry prices where everyone can come as they are and be themselves. We have an awesome sense of community - it is amazing how connected we are… it’s not just what people are doing on the dj side - we all learn and enjoy an experience together.

Thank you, Nic and Natalie! The lineup is stacked on this one and I will be there in spirit. I appreciate your time and great conversations.
