If you are a Bass & Breaks head, don't sleep on this.  Like I said in my past write up [Link]...I like to hit the club/festie as much as the next chap, but if you don't have that in your hood this weekend, this is the spot to be.  I popped into MTG FOF4 for a few sets and some pretty off the cuff humor in the live chat last night.  All the music was pumping, jokes were slinging and I was stoked to see people from 4 or 5 time zones and twice as many countries across the planet.  Check the flyer, and more of my jabber below;) Event_MTG_FOF4_2015-02-19, #JuiceRecordings, #ItsWesSmithYo, #WesSmith, #TheJuiceSquad, #StickyBumps, #BringBackThatFunk, #Califunkya, #CampCharlie, #EDM, #UDM, #Bass, #Funk, #Breaks, #Breakbeat, #Garage, #2step, #UK, #FutureGarage #USA, #California, #SanDiego, #MTG, #MonkeyTennisGroup, #FestivalOfFriends, #PerfectKombo, #MikeNice, #AtomicHooligan, #DJChronic, #Fonik, #KarlSav

Wobble Recap w/DJ Icey, Omega Squad, Diva Danielle & Adia Break b/w of San Diego

Oh what fun it was!  Goodtimes catching up with my homie from the other coast DJ Icey!  What a special time for me rockin' the decks again with one of my all time inspirations and early supporters.   The night kicked off right with San Diego's Adia Break from 1200 Hustle Crew followed up by and hour of groovy bangers by LA's Diva Danielle.  I met Diva at my first Burn, she also happens to be the fearless leader of #CampCharlie. Peep all the friends on Soundcloud.  DJ Icey, Omega Squad, Diva Danielle, Adia Break, and yours truly, Wes Smith!

Wes Smith's Hot Mess Q & A w/Mutantbreakz out of Cadiz, Spain

Mutantbreakz brings us to the tail of the Hot Mess Q&A's.  While I've not met these guys in person, they have a jolly sense of humor and I've had a bunch of fun collaborating on a few choons with them. Numero Uno, they did a smokin remix of my Better At Night jammie out on Diablo Loco Records which also happens to be their top flyer on Beatport;)  Next up was their more recent and my personal favorite, Bassline Crew Feat. MC Lickey (Mutantbreakz Remix) for my Hot Mess The Album Remixed project.  Finally, I've got a remix for the boyz forthcoming on Lady Waks IBWT label out of Russia and their own imprint early in 2015.

So without further rambling...big ups to the fellas for giving us a couple minutes from their run around Europe and remixing the planet...

Wes Smith's Hot Mess Q & A w/DJ Fixx out of Tampa, FL

DJ Fixx...takes a few minutes from his run for president to drop a short but sweet chat in another episode of East meets West breakbeat action.  I met Fixx @ a gig in New York City some time in the mid 2000's.  Aside from being the undisputed smasher of the Beatport Breaks chart action for the Hot Mess The Album Remixed project...b/w of his remix of Ohhh Yeahhh Feat. Shana Rockit...he's a brilliant producer and always a constant inspiration.  Check the iLL-ustration, words and sounds below. Artist_DjFixx, JuiceRecordings, TheJuiceSquad, WesSmith, WhiteBoyAwesome, DirtyKicks, BumpRStickR, LowEndHustler, DubleTime, SuperSoulFighter, StickyBumps, #BringBackThatFunk, #HotMessGoesBoom, #JuiceHeads, #FriendsInLowPlaces, #858FunkBass, #Califunkya, #JuiceDrops, #CampCharlie, #CampCharlieLove, #Unicorns, #UnicornMagic, #Breaks, #Breakbeat, #EDM, #UDM

Q: What are a few things you would like people to know about you?

A: I am a producer that is always evolving. I think sitting in the same pocket or same sound is why some producers get left in the dust. U have to stay current…and I pride myself on that…

Q: Where can people find you on the Interwebs?

A: Everywhere lol… I keep my Soundcloud and Facebook Band page meticulously updated. Soundcloud | Facebook

Q: What is your favorite track you produced?

A: That is a question for me that is always hard to answer.  I always like the newer stuff more than the older stuff but if I had to choose favorites, Middle Finger, Trust Your Gut, Shake It Naughty, and Major Malfunction are some of my all time favs.

Q: Any secrets you want to share about your studio setup/techniques?

A: Use a template…make it yourself but use it to start each tune.  It can cut out hours of tedious routing and bussing work that u have to do for each tune.

Q: How much time do you spend in the studio each week?

A: 50-60 hours.

Q: Do you have a favorite or memorable show/gig?

A: I love playing everywhere but if I had to pick I would say anywhere in Cali…some of the most loyal fans out there and the parties are still massive.

Q: Do you Prefer Turntables, CDJ’s or Controllers?

A: CDJs

Q: How do you prep for a show/gig?

A: Always burn fresh CDs for each gig…and rest up…it's going to be a long night.

Q: Any shout outs to Producers, Deejays, Crews, Pets?

A: Shout out to my daughter's 4 fish who I have to take care of cause she is too little.

Q: Favorite Color & Food?

A: Color - Black, Food - Alfredo

Thanks for the shout out, totally cool having you on board the album and setting a personal record in the charts!

Wes Smith's Hot Mess Q & A w/Splitloop from Dublin

Splitloop, the incredibly talented and globally recognized purveyors of breaks take a minute or five to tell us a bit about themselves and drop a few nuggets of know how, humor and inspiration.   They recently worked out a wicked remix of Hot Mess for the Hot Mess The Album Remixed project, which for me was on the upper levels of excitement of say...having Carl Sagan (RIP) drop by for lunch.  Check out the chat w/Phil & Bren below. Artist_Splitloop, JuiceRecordings, TheJuiceSquad, WesSmith, WhiteBoyAwesome, DirtyKicks, BumpRStickR, LowEndHustler, DubleTime, SuperSoulFighter, StickyBumps, #BringBackThatFunk, #HotMessGoesBoom, #JuiceHeads, #FriendsInLowPlaces, #858FunkBass, #Califunkya #JuiceDrops #CampCharlie, #CampCharlieLove, #Unicorns, #UnicornMagic #Breaks, #Breakbeat, #EDM, #UDM #Splitloop

Q: What are a few things you would like people to know about you?

A: Splitloop have been around since 2003, released 2 albums and a glut of singles, and have played around the world.

Q: Where can people find you on the Interwebs?

A: Soundcloud (www.soundcloud.com/splitloop), Facebook (www.facebook.com/splitloop), Twitter (@Splitloop)

Q: What is your favorite track you produced?

A: Bren: This changes, have a few, for me probably Frequency Rebel.  Phil: Yeah for me it’s probably Frequency Rebel or Method One (VIP Edit)

Q: Any secrets you want to share about your studio setup/techniques?

A: Phil: Nothing really special about the setup.  Ableton Live running a bunch of synths and plugins which go bleep and bloop through some speakers.  I’m a firm believer that it’s not what gear you have, it’s how well you know it and how much time you put into it.  Don’t be one of those guys with a million plugins and every bit of gear you can see in some producer’s studio on Youtube.  Build your setup piece by piece, getting to know what you have 100% before adding something else.  In the long run it means you’ll be able to make whatever sounds you want because you know how to use the tools at your disposal.  Not clicking through presets hoping to hear a sound that you like.  Having said that though, I’ve spent a small fucking fortune on synths and speakers ;)

Q: How much time do you spend in the studio each week?

A: Way too much time. Probably a solid 40 hours.

Q: Do you have a favorite or memorable show/gig?

A: Phil:  Has to be our first time playing Fabric. I nearly puked before going on.  Bren:  Fabric room 1 or else playing live for Annie Knightingale in Berlin on Radio 1

Q: Do you Prefer Turntables, CDJ’s or Controllers?

A: Phil: For DJing I prefer CDJs. I never really thought I’d prefer them to turntables, but it just feels more natural playing on them now. Bren: Like DJing but it's turn tables for that and love playing live so depends.  They are both different, a live set probably more rewarding if done right as it's all your stuff.

Q: How do you prep for a show/gig?

A: Phil:  Extremely well. If you’re unfamiliar or unpracticed with a set, it just means if something goes even slightly awry you’ll have a panic on stage, which is not fun. It’s unfair to punters who have paid good money to support you to do anything other than play a blinder.  Bren: Word, to our credit we always prepare really well for any set.

Q: Any shout outs to Producers, Deejays, Crews, Pets?

A: Shout out to all the bedroom producers out there, hoping it’ll happen some day.  The first time you feel your chest shake in a club or a festival with a beat that you made is a serious high.  So keep it up and keep the quality control high.

Q: Favorite Color & Food?

A: Phil:  Brown M&Ms, Bren:  I like colours and food

The Crystal Method Drops "Bring Back That Funk" at Future Sound of Breaks 2014

This weeks stand out Juice Drop was The Crystal Method delivering Wes Smith & White Boy Awesome's "Bring Back That Funk" in front of the FSOB main floor massive.  Earlier that day the crew had a chance to sit down with TCM's Ken Jordan and chat a bit about TCM, music, surfing, burning man,  and SoCal desert parties.  A few minutes with the legends of stateside breaks was already a treat. Later that evening, as FSOB got rolling at Mekka...Agent K, Bella, Mafia Kiss, and DJ Icey all played floor shaking sets.  TCM opens with some cool intros and to our surprise drops "Bring Back That Funk" out of the gate.  Icing on the cake for us.  Big ups TCM and everyone that rocked FSOB! Peep the video and sound clips below via JuiceRecordingsTV and Soundcloud.

Wes Smith & The Juice Squad @ Winter Music Conference 2014

God Speed to our chief donut maker Wes Smith as he packs his Beverly Hillbillies rig and takes off East to rep Juice Recordings & The Juice Squad at WMC 2014.  He's got two gigs, nicely spaced and even better placed.  The first one is the 10th Year Anniversary of Project Mayhem, the renowned industry party.  Numero Dos is the Gimme A Break Pool Party.  And then of course he'll be sticker bombing the rest of the time!  If you're in Miami, Enjoy! Holiday Party Busted; Officer D.J. Hyper Tells The Juice Squad to Turn Down the Funk a Notch

The Juice Squad has been to some dope parties in their day, but few compare to the 2013 Bring Back That Funk fest @ the Beatport Breaks #1 slot hosted by Wes Smith & White Boy Awesome.  The red carpet was full of fan favorites from Splitloop & Brad Smith to Head Set Heroes, but here's a few notable outtakes from TJS' water cooler captain M.C. Lickey.

The line to get in to The Juice Factory was crazy but kudos to Agent K who showed support with a fist full of Money.  Early on DJ Icey brought some Freaky Stuff and DJ Fixx was straight tossing Dolla Bills while Curtis B kept trying to Throw It Back.  At one point I thought I smelled a rat but it was just Keith Mackenzie trying to Freak Dat while Colombo was handing off the dance circle to a Part of Me that was poppin' out of control to the sounds of Fort Knox Five's Party Pushers.

Inside the main tent, Beta was showing skills with Mad Rhythm on the 1200's and Colombo was gittin things twisted @ the bar mixing up The Brainkiller.  This put Kid Panel in a freeze saying "U Know How I Do" when I'm on that Diablo Loco.  Stanton Warriors were getting ready to Cut Me Up with sick bass while Krafty Kuts seemed to Feel Like Jumpin to Deekline's Groove Thang in the booty bass room.  Later in the night I saw Slyde getting electric and he just said "I Can't Help It  man", Will Atkinson is doing Perfecto dropping Damage on the dance floor.

Just as as things were hitting capacity and started to become a real Hot Mess, Kuplay insisted we should Never Say No to The Pooty Club so we opened the doors to let them in.  Turned out Bella was right behind them telling them they should find Somebody To Love and that's when Officer D.J. Hyper popped his head up with some Lies about the noise limits and proceeded to put a stop to the Breed of funk that had fueled the month long frenzy.

TJS being the sporting kind had a brief chat with Officer Hyper and figured what goes up must come down.  So after an unforgettable fiesta numero uno, we agreed to dial the volume down to #2 on the scale of 10 and slowly wind things out for 2013;)

For a complete run down of the fiesta, check the Bring Back That Funk page.
